Welcome to Option One Plumbing Tips, where we're here to tackle one of the most common household issues - a clogged toilet. Whether you're a DIY enthusiast or just someone looking to save a few bucks on a plumbing service call, we've got you covered. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to effectively unclog your toilet and restore the flow with ease.
How To Fix A Clogged Toilet ( 7 Steps )
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Before diving into the unclogging process, make sure you have the necessary supplies on hand. Here's what you'll need:
- Toilet Plunger ( YES there are different plungers !!!!!! )
- Rubber gloves
- Bucket
- Toilet auger (optional)
Step 2: Put On Your Protective Gear
Put on your rubber gloves to protect your hands from any potential mess. It's always better to be safe than sorry!!!! Trust us we know from experience.
Step 3: Assess the Situation
Before grabbing the plunger, take a moment to assess the severity of the clog. If you notice any visible obstructions (like excess toilet paper or foreign objects), use a gloved hand or a tool to remove them. Make sure to be gentle to not scratch the porcelain.
Step 4: Plunge Away
Make sure the toilet bowl has water in it ( enough to cover the plunger head) Place the plunger over the drain opening and create a tight seal making sure all air has escaped from the plunger head. Push down gently and then pull up forcefully, repeating the motion several times to not break the seal. This should create suction and dislodge the clog.
Step 5: Flush and Test
After plunging, flush the toilet to see if the water drains properly. If the clog persists, repeat the plunging process until the water flows smoothly. Remember if the clog is too severe, excessive plunging could potentially damage the wax ring.
Step 6: Try a Toilet Auger (if necessary)
If the plunger alone doesn't do the trick, it's time to bring out the toilet auger. Insert the auger into the drain and turn the handle clockwise, make sure the rubber boot at the base of the auger is in place so you don't damage the porcelain. This should help break up and possibly remove the clog. Remember be careful donโt be too forcefully and avoid damaging the toilet.
Step 7: Final Flush and Cleanup
Once the clog is cleared, give the toilet a final flush to ensure everything is flowing smoothly. A good way to test if the clog is truly removed and the toilet is working properly is to perform the Option One Plumbing's famed three-ply test !!! To perform this test, take a good amount of toilet paper no more than you would normally use, put it into the bowl, and flush it right away.
If the toilet flushes normally CONGRATULATIONS YOUR TOILET HAS PASSED OPTION ONE PLUMBING'S THREE-PLY TEST !!!!! If your toilet backs up again it is a good indication there is a clog or foreign object stuck in the toilet s-trap which may cause further work, possibly having to remove the toilet to properly clear the stoppage.
